WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The Cenci is Antonin Artaud's only attempt to put on stage what he set out to describe in his revolutionary Theater of Cruelty manifestos. Based on an infamous trial and inspired by Stendhal's sordid case history, as well as Shelley's controversial play, Artaud's version of the Roman scandal of 1599 takes on a venomous tone in his clipped account of Catholic oppression and greed. Now, in a production by the acclaimed Hotel Savant theater company headed by John Jahnke, The Cenci is performed in New York for the first time in 35 years in a new translation by Richard Sieburth.
On Saturday, February 23, Patrons can buy a special $50.00 donation ticket, $30.00 of which is tax deductible.

But today, little about this portrait of a sexually voracious and sadistic Italian nobleman's exploits stuns. Neither does Artaud's dramaturgy -- which eschews psychological realism and slavish fidelity to a text in order to assault the senses through image and gesture. Still, there is much to recommend in John Jahnke's über-stylish, if uneven, production.
The nobleman in question here is Count Cenci (Anthony Torn), who has two of his sons murdered and rapes his daughter, Beatrice (Lauren Blumenfeld). In revenge for these acts and others, Beatr[...]
