WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Talent is a behind-the-scenes look at a talent competition in a small British cabaret. It centers on Julie a secretary-turned-aspiring singer and her overweight best friend Maureen. While waiting backstage for Julie's "big break" (and trying to learn the lyrics to "Cabaret"), they encounter a motley assortment of performers and club dwellers. Despite the rumors that the contest is fixed, does Julie have enough talent to win?

As Mama Rose says on the subject of talent, "You either got it or you ain't." The trouble is that people with talent sometimes don't or won't recognize it and, perhaps much more frequently, those who do not have it are unwaveringly convinced that they do. It's with the latter, madding crowd that Victoria Wood has chosen to deal, as have so many before her -- not the least of whom was Noël Coward. "The Red Peppers," a one-act from Coward's short-play program Tonight at 8:30 , established the mocking, slightly superior tone for assaults on the presumptuously ungifted types whom Wood struts out for laughs in the 80-minute comedy Talent.
