Stone Monkey Banished is drawn from the episodes of the 16th century Chinese folk novel by Wu Ch'eng-en called The Journey to the West. The book relates the adventures on the way to enlightenment for a virtuous monk and his three disciples: an unruly monkey, a pig-faced creature, and a green-haired swamp monster who wears a string of skulls around his neck.
