WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Together, Edward Bond's Stone and The Maguffin by Adam Hunault and Stone Soup Theatre Arts offer an unforgettable night of puppetry, outrageous political farce, and original song. With their use of half-puppet and half-human characters, Stone Soup explores the concept of who is the puppet and who is the puppeteer, both formally through the use of the puppets and conceptually through the subject of both plays.
A chilling fairy tale, Stone explores the power and risks of finding one's own place in the world as a young man is asked to deliver an ordinary stone to a mason's house. The puppet character elements are the first of such re-imagining for the show, which was originally commissioned by England's Gay Sweatshop Theatre during the 1970s.
The Maguffin takes a decidedly modern turn, examining how contemporary political issues - gay marriage, for instance - are exploited by sound-bite politicians' need for media control and re-election. This original farce speculates what happens when the gay marriage movement dies, creating a frenzied attempt by the Republican party to revitalize it in order for the party to preserve identity and to perpetuate their struggle against the agenda of the liberal left.
Admission to Opening Night also includes a special party.
