WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

St. Ann's Warehouse is co-commissioning and presenting Making It, a new concert presentation by Passing Strange creator, Stew. A critically acclaimed singer-songwriter and four-time Tony nominee, Stew received the 2008 Tony Award for
Best Book of a Musical for Passing Strange, which moved to Broadway after being developed at the Public Theater. He leads, along with collaborator Heidi Rodewald, two critically acclaimed bands: The Negro Problem and Stew. Never fitting snugly into any genre of the contemporary art-entertainment world, Stew and Heidi have been making art in a category-free zone. They describe themselves as "Tony/Obie award winning theater
freaks, indie-rockers, film-makers, cabaret-artists" who prefer to move freely between genres and grab what they need.

Making It is a multi-media, rock show collage of song, text, video and theatrical whimsy which
irreverently traces the unlikely careers of Stew and Heidi from the dive rock clubs of Hollywood and squatted houses of Berlin to the footlights of Broadway and Spike Lee's lens -- with Stew as the dubious guide. Stew and Heidi's latest musical journey traces their careers from under the radar and into the mainstream, mass media
spotlight of Broadway, accompanied by six multi-instrumentalists led by Stew, with Heidi on film, interweaving their personal narratives on what happened to them and their relationship.
