WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Stephen Petronio's kinetically rich, visceral movement language deals with abstraction of form, juxtaposing an extreme sense of urgency with a lush sensuality. His meticulously structured dances comment on identity, human relationships and popular culture with an unabashed physicality. For the 2007 season, Petronio has assembled a collection of works that explore his passion for complex architectural landscapes and the delicacy and awkwardness of human interaction. The program features the world premiere of Without You II, a study on bonding and dependence set to music by Placebo; and a new solo, For Today I Am a Boy, commissioned by Dancers Responding to AIDS and set to music by the extraordinary Antony. A focal point of the program is the revival of ReBourne. Created in 1997 and set to a remix of music by post-punk icons the Beastie Boys, ReBourne's restless structure overlays two dances that simultaneously occupy the same space, by turns ignoring, mutating, and transforming each other along the way. The program is completed by the Company premiere of The Ship Song, the undulating romantic highlight from Petronio's Underland, created for Sydney Dance Company in 2003 with music by Nick Cave; and an encore presentation of Bud Suite, last season's savvy, sensual suite of dances to music by Rufus Wainwright.
