Inspired by Spoon River Anthology, Jose Rivera wrote Sonnets for an Old Century in 1998. The play offers a surprising look at what it means to be alive--as seen from the afterlife; an afterlife filled with lyricism, power and whimsy, as few but Rivera could describe it. The multicultural cast of characters confronts the play's central event--their last chance to address lifelong passions--and as they do, they illuminate the full scope of American experience today. Emory Van Cleve directs.
