WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Song of the Simple Truth - El Canto de Julia de Burgos is a bilingual musicalization conceived and directed by Melba LaRose. The piece is adapted from Song of the Simple Truth - the complete poems of Julia de Burgos, a bilingual edition of some 200 poems by Puerto Rico's national treasure poet, compiled and translated by local poet Jack Agueros. The selection of 24 poems dramatizes the passionate and tumultuous life of de Burgos and is assisted by infectious Caribbean rhythms, live guitar, flute, percussion and a costume design of colorful Spanish shawls.
