WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

National Black Theatre in association with First World Theatre Ensemble presents Sojourner, by Richard LaMonte Pierce.

Sojourner is the biography of Sojourner Truth. The play takes a hard look at her life, not only as a black woman, but as a slave. It also takes a compelling look at pre-civil war America and what led to the conflict. Sojourner tells a grim shameful tale of a young girl sold at auction to a succession of slave masters, set not in the American South, but in the North. While this coming-of-age narrative is filled with acts of random horrific cruelty, it will at times make you laugh, then make you cry, force you to take a look at the morals, values and conditions that shaped America, and instill in you awe at Sojourner Truth's unwavering spirit to overcome -- Be moved to "sojourn for the truth... even to the ends of the earth."

Sojourner stars Zuhairah McGill, whose dynamic performance as Sojourner Truth garnered a Barrymore nomination for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Play in 2002.
