WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Abrons Arts Center Urban Youth Theater presents Slambaret. In this production, a poetry slam meets cabaret, and "Life is a Cabaret" gets redefined for the 21st Century. An old favorite song like "42nd Street" can begin traditionally and suddenly take on a funky hip-hop beat and break into a slam dance. The evening will include everything from tap dance and rap poetry to movie songs, original poems and prose as well as words from Shakespeare and Poe, revisited in a modern meter. The Recital Hall of the Abrons Arts Center will be reconfigured for the occasion to create an intimate and interactive cabaret space, where the audience will be asked to dance or participate in an open mic. Slambaret is directed and choreographed by Eddie D. Robinson, with musical direction by Ben Cohn.
