WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the inception of the relations between the United States and Japan, Sachiyo Ito & Company presents a concert of Japanese Classical, Contemporary and Okinawan Dance. Featured is a rare performance of the kabuki dance drama Onatsu Kyoran (Onatsu, the Insane) - created by Shoyo Tsubouchi, the renowned drama-reformer of late 19th and early 20th century Japan. The program also includes Night Pond, choreographed by Ito to Shakuhachi music composed by Geoffrey Leopord; Morning Song, a premier, choreographed by guest artist Shogo Fujima to contemporary koto music by Tadao Sawai. There are two Okinawan dances accompanied by New York Okinawan Sanshin Club: Chibari Daiko - the favorite company repertoire of Okinawan dance, who's theme takes from the summer time Bon Festival; Chondara, a rare staging of the itinerant performers' dance.
