This February, the award-winning Judith Shakespeare Company presents Resurgence, concert readings of three exciting new plays in verse. Each reading will be followed by a brief discussion of the play led by dramaturg Maxine Kern.
A Breach in Autumn by Sandra Lindberg: Based on actual events during the reign of James I, this powerful and moving verse drama is the story of a mother's fight to protect her daughter from a terrible arranged marriage. Challenging the system and defying the status quo arouses the dangerous wrath of the King's court in this dynamic exploration of the politics of gender.
Sirius Rising by Gwendolyn Schwinke: Vibrant free verse lifts classic American themes to the heights of Greek drama in this haunting play based on the myth of Isis and Osiris. As a flood of epic proportions descends on their rural farm community, four women discover that human connection is their only shelter against the storm.
The Rape of the Lock by Paul Hagen: In this theatricalization of his classic 17th Century epic poem, Alexander Pope is portrayed as the crankiest playwright ever, as five actors alternately suffer under and subvert his tyrannical direction. Judith Shakespeare Company's signature 'gender-reversed casting' comes in brilliant contact with rollicking rhymed couplets in this mischievous take on Pope's story of jealousy and seduction.
