This is a twisted adaptation of Anton Chekov's first play: a posthumously adored, unnamed manuscript, popularly known as Platonov. Playwright Eric Michael Kochmer has created a world where sex and infamy are the easiest paths to notoriety, and true glory lies in the devaluing of others. In a desperate ploy to expose the grossness of society, the local schoolteacher, Mikhail Platonov, destroys himself, stripping his life of all things that his world holds in high esteem: morality, dignity, reputation and right-headed beliefs. The punchline is that the world only loves and respects him more, thrusting him up the social ladder with ill-concealed glee.
