Colombian playwright and actor Jaime Espinal stars as a disgruntled office worker by day, super hero by night, who comes to the U.S. to work for an agency that links foreign exchange students to host families, with hilarious results. It is outrageously funny and and irreverent, especially in light of the heated debate about immigration.
The play was the winner of the Inter American Development Bank's inaugural Hispanic-American Playwriting Competition: "Hispanics in the U.S. but Without Stereotypes" (the best of 170 new plays by authors from 17 different nations). Mr. Espinal is a celebrated novelist in Colombia, where his work has won the Premio Nacional de Novela (National Bookwriter Award). "No Problemo, Amigo" is his first play; he is expected to be an important new voice on the international stage, so we are particularly excited to produce his stage debut.
The play is performed in English, Spanish, and "Spanglish". Supertitles, videos, and projections onstage will help everyone navigate between the languages. There also will be live music performed by Mr. Espinal and his band, Los Tres Cerditos (The 3 Little Pigs), direct from Colombia. It is designed and directed by Angel Gil Orrios.
