Cambridge education and ambitious, young Vivie Warren is horrified to discover that her mother supported her and paid for her education through prostitution and managing brothels. The play turns on how Vivie views her mother's harsh but practically effective choices. Set in late 19th century England, this is one of the earliest works exploring the emergence of self determination among middle class European women.
