The Producer's Club will present former journalist, now turned playwright Kathy Kafer's new drama, A MOTHER'S PRAYER. Inspires by a national headline event, this play begins after a retarded teenager has been raped by several high school athletes. The drama focuses on the two mothers involved: Hannah, a brilliant physics teacher, is the mother of the victim; Ellen, an interior decorator, is the mother of one of the golden boy scholar/athletes involved in the rape. Not only must both women come to terms with what the rape means to them and their children, but they must also deal with its shattering impact on their life-long friendship. Questions are subtly raised regarding disability, the price of "success," community responsibility, and the nature of motherhood. Unsentimental, direct and economically written, the characters are deeply etched and grapple with tough issues of loyalty and protection.
