WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

[Editor's Note: This is the sixth in a series of roundups on the 2010 New York International Fringe Festival.]

Jurassic Parq: The Broadway Musical, at La MaMa E.T.C.'s Ellen Stewart Theatre, doesn't just parody the 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park, based on Michael Crichton's novel about a dinosaur theme park gone wild; it actually succeeds in telling the story from the dinosaurs' point-of-view.

In writers Emma Barash, Bryce Norbitz, Steve Wargo, and Marshall Pailet's clever reimagining, the dinos (who, you may remember, are all engineered to be female to prevent "unauthorized" reproduction) live in a peaceful, faith-based community that worships the lab workers who created them. However,[...]

Missionary Position
This production was seen on 8/22/10 in the SoHo Playhouse West Village NYC: I admit that I was hoping for this play to be something along the lines of the movie ?Latter Days? but instead this production was more of just a personal rambling that was, only sometimes, interesting and completely full of innuendo. I just don?t know what to say about this one man show performed by Steven Fales, except that it was not like the movie. Be warned that there is a brief period of nudity when Fales removes his clothing and for just that alone its well worth the admission price. The performance that I attended was cut short by the stage hands who ?flashed him the lights? to get off stage at the 75 minute point some 15 minutes before it was supposed to end and I?m not sure how I feel about that. I want to feel cheated that I had to sit through this long, sometimes boring, story and didn?t get to hear the end. But at the same time I don?t feel cheated enough to want to sit through it again to possibly hear the ending. I feel that I would have been better served had Fales told me more about his internal struggle with religion and homosexuality instead of his random thoughts about people and places he went to. Overall it was an interesting night but I don?t know if he has sold me on wanting to go to his third installment called ?Who?s Your Daddy?? due out in 2011. PART 2: This production was seen on 8/27/10 in the SoHo Playhouse West Village NYC: Well I decided to give this one man play by ex-Mormon missionary, ?Elder? Fales, one more shot and I have to say that I was not as disappointed this time around. The last 15 minutes of the play, that I had not seen before, were actually wonderfully insightful and truly conveyed Fales dealings and conflicts with the church, the missions and the Mormon religion itself. Although this insight was done in a gimmicky way where, in full ?Back to the Future? style, ?future Steve? goes back to speak to ?past Steve? and tells him to leave the church. This portion of his show was done with genuine feelings and passion and could have been done without the gimmicks and still held as much impact. My only wish would have been that his entire play had been more of these heart-felt, true to life, moments instead of fluff and fantasy scenarios. I still don?t know if he has sold me on wanting to go to his third installment, ?Who?s Your Daddy??, but at least I?m open to it now.
