La MaMa E.T.C. presents the ground-breaking theater group Split Britches in the world premiere of Miss America, written and performed by Peggy Shaw and Lois Weaver.

In their newest duet, Peggy Shaw and Lois Weaver turn their unapologetic critique and riotous humor loose on the dissolution of the American Dream. A beauty pageant on a landfill full of too much information in the midst of a giant storm, Miss America exposes what is lost in a society that is still hopelessly clinging to winning.

Three theaters comprise this complex in the East Village. Ellen Stewart created this legendary name in theater and has been encouraging artists and performers from all quarters of the earth for over forty years.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?


"I am your co-dependent Cassandra of a falling empire," announces Lois Weaver early on in Miss America, the terrific new Split Britches show that she co-created with longtime collaborator Peggy Shaw. The pair established their reputations in the early 1980s by examining butch/femme lesbian dynamics. And while that is not absent from their current work, the duo is now taking a broader look at contemporary politics.

There are some blatantly didactic moments, such as Weaver's outlining of all the "terrorist" acts committed by the United States, inclusive of the annihilation of Native Americans, slavery, and the bombing of civilian targets. But these segments are balanced by more whimsical in[...]
