WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Michiyo Sato and Dancers performs at the Joyce SoHo in a commemorative celebration of "US-Japan Friendship 150 years". The two poetic performances, The Plum Tree Is in Bloom and Silk Mother, are major works that promise to enlighten the public about Japanese women, past and present.
The Plum Tree Is in Bloom is based on the true story of Ume Tsuda. This multi-faceted dance will encompass original music by Carman Moore, live Koto, visual projections and beautiful Kimono-based costumes to depict the fascinating inner life of a woman who possessed visionary values.
Silk Mother juxtaposes the self-sacrifice of silk worms and the Japanese women bound to the silk industry in the 20th century. The evening's work is complimented by costumes from Tomoumi Ono and original music by composer Carman Moore.
