WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
"The Spice Girls may be yesterday's fad, but at The Flea Theater in Tribeca, girl power is alive and well." -- Time Out New York
LAVA, the all-female Brooklyn-based company led by founder Sarah East Johnson, marks its 7th year of earth-moving performance this spring at The Flea Theater. In addition to a premiere production by the adult company, LAVA's all-girl (Junior) company MAGMA will present a revival of LAVA's 1999 Bessie and Obie Award winning Lava Love.
The show mixes daring acrobatics with flowing choreography, including some of LAVA's signature acts: hoop-diving, adagio, and double trapeze. The young performers (ages 8 to 18) build, unbuild, and rebuild spectacular human pyramids; they flow and move like a family. They also exhibit their many talents in a variety of manifestations, including traditional wrestling, tumbling, and swing dancing. Inspired by volcanoes, geologic activity serves as a metaphor for the resilient and powerful relationships between young women.
Lava Love is performed by a company of 11 girls, ages 8 - 18 with visuals by Nancy Brooks Brody and music by Aimee Norwich, Le Tigre, Pink, Glen Miller, and others.
