While there's something to be said for playwright-director Richard Maxwell, there may not be an enormous lot to be said. This, however, hasn't stopped theater mavens from devoting column inch after column inch to what they see as his copious gifts. Perhaps most prominent among those mavens is Ben Brantley of The New York Times, who, in praising the playwright's recent Drummer Wanted, concluded his review by saying that the piece "confirms that he may indeed turn out to be one of the most innovative and essential artists to emerge from American experimental theater in the past decade."
