WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The award-winning Judith Shakespeare Company presents a reading of an exciting new comedy by up-and-coming playwright Kevin Brewer. The event includes a wine and cheese reception, Shakespearean themed door prizes, and a silent auction.
Island is a fascinating exploration of classical text and characters coming face-to-face with modern thought. Set on the Island of Arden, an exiled 17th century monarch, King John II, rules happily and lovingly over his court. King John's retinue includes a kindly advisor, a dark and brooding brother, a mystical hermit and her deformed children, a lovelorn Prince, and a band of bumbling constables led by a blustering local magistrate. As preparations are made for Prince Palamon's 18th birthday celebration, a violent tempest washes to shore two beautiful young women from the 21st century. The resulting story is a poetic tale of Shakespearean love and treachery held up to the mirror of modern sensibilities.
