In a Strange Room is about the experience of being put in a box - both metaphorically and literally. The play, based on William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying, takes place in a 12'x12'x6 wooden crate, the theatrical extension of the casket that the character Cash builds for his dying mother. As the mother slips into earth, Cash entombs 15 audience members in the box (with a handful of others on the outside looking in) and the 13-member cast is forced to co-exist in the same impossible space - inside it, outside it, through it, below it, above it and beyond it. Through the interstices of the planked walls, performers and spectators spy on each other as fractured light and overheard conversations trickle in and out of consciousness.
