WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Luminous Work presents I, Marlena as part of the 10th annual New York International Fringe Festival. Created by Brooklyn theater-maker Laylage Courie and Athens, Georgia-based composer & guitarist, Dan Nettles, this "short-story with a film score" receives its world-premiere at the 10th annual New York International Fringe Festival.
Marlena, an office-worker, ruminates over a remembered, rain-drenched drive from rural America through the suburbs into the city. A man spotted three times on the road becomes the centerpiece of a subtly erotic fantasy which manifests as creative office destruction. Nettles' indie-jazz score for Courie's text is edgy and bitter-sweet, thematically blending poetic rhapsody and straight-forward narration. Performed by Courie and Kenosha Kid (electric guitar, upright bass, percussion) in a power-point projected "frame" crafted from Marlena's "now" of standard clip-art, gif files, and light-spotted video clips, I, Marlena is lyrical story-telling for the 21st century.
