WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
From its debut in 1906 when Asch was encouraged to burn it, to the 1923 Broadway production when the cast and the producers were thrown in jail on obscenity charges, God of Vengeance has always provoked controversy. The play centers on a brothel owner whose dreams of striking a bargain with God to keep his daughter pure are decimated when she falls in love with one of his "girls."
