WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

The Anthropologists, a theatre company known for their devised work rich in meaning, history and kinetic movement, presents the world premiere of Give Us Bread, conceived and directed by Melissa Fendell Moschitto.

In February 1917, prices for basic food items rose dramatically. Unable and unwilling to pay prices that had nearly doubled, ordinary women banded together to enforce neighborhood boycotts that soon erupted into full-scale riots. Through their courage, similar movements spread across the country. Two weeks later, food prices dropped. As today's food prices creep upward, food riots are happening all over the modern world. Using 1917 as a lens, we will examine today's globally-scaled food crisis.

Alongside the performances is a curated series of innovative programming, The Food Riot Project, designed to dig deeper into contemporary food issues, social justice and other themes touched on in Give Us Bread. The Food Riot Project will feature workshops, discussions and tours with keynote speakers and guests such as Deputy Borough President Rose Pierre-Louis, renowned authors Raj Patel and Joel Berg and organizations like The Action Center to End World Hunger and Dan Barber's Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture.
