WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
First Weekends New Performance and Discussion hosts a wekeend of unusual, standout live performance by choreographers who each have a unique vision. David Appel brings miniature internal universes to life, Melinda Bing cultivates missteps and mistakes and Andrea Shasgus explores blades of grass within urban chaos. Line-Up David Appel presents the next segment of I was thinking about this, then I thought about that., an episodic cavalcade of short solos that celebrate the power of our capacity for empathy. He takes discovered shards and strands of movement, and digs deep inside them to bring to life the little universes within. Melinda Ring presents a section from Faux Pas, cultivating missteps, mistakes, and the odd improvisational moment to create choreography that teases the audience, and leaves them wondering, how much of what just happened was planned? The piece is set to a messed with version of Beethoven's Pathétique Sonata, and danced by Joseph Poulson, Kim Hamlin and Ring. The Infamous Green by Andrea Shasgus was inspired by the contrast between a hurried and often competitive urban life, and the relationships that occur within it. Set against a projection of blades of grass, the duet depicts several different phases of an encounter between two people that begins with an abrupt collision.
