WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Ensemble Studio Theatre presents the EST marathon 2002. This 25th annual festival offers twelve premieres of one-act plays in three separate series of four each. Each series runs two weeks. Among the playwrights are Horton Foote, Romulus Linney, Lisa-Maria Radano, Billy Aronson, Brian Silberman, Bill Bozzone, Roger Hedden, Graeme Gillis, Peter Maloney, Rogelio Martinez, Dan O?Brien, and Patricia Scanlon.

There was a time when you couldn't do much with a one-act but put it on a bill with another one-act or maybe, depending on length, two or three of them. Times have changed somewhat. Nowadays, producers are happy to let a longish one-act stand on its own. A 45-minute playlet such as Caryl Churchill's Far Away, due at the New York Theater Workshop in the fall, is considered a sufficient evening of drama. And some presenters are comfortable with even shorter works, like Harold Pinter's Ashes to Ashes at 40 minutes, not to mention his Mountain Language at 20 minutes.
