WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
In keeping with Deptford's mission, The Deptford Players is presenting three new works in the Fall 2003 New Play Festival. The Forest for the Trees, written by Jeff Berry and directed by Michael Bernstein, is a lighthearted romp in a faerie forest. Written in Elizabethan verse, as used by Marlowe and Shakespeare, the play is a romantic comedy in the best tradition. Though strange things happen in the woods at night, all will turn out well in the end. Gentleman and Scholar, written by John Martin and directed by Constance George, evokes Shaw. Treating of a recently-deceased professor, the Scholar of the title, and his interview upon reaching his eternal destination, the play is a witty and funny examination of human frailty and foibles. Oooh, Vicar! Where's Your Trousers?, written and directed by Jeff Berry, isn't much about words, ideas or much of anything really. It's a silly, baggy-pants farce about - what else? - the obstacles of true love. It may not be deep, or earnestly moving, but it is funny and it's also short.
On October 23, there is a special benefit Gala after the performance with champagne and dessert.
