WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Elizabeth "MACHA" Marrero is at once again with DAKA Bocona from the Boogie Down Bronx! The big-mouthed, Bronx-born Boriqua invokes her many characters to bring a fresh observation to her childhood, her family and the her life influences growing up in the boogie down Bronx. The show, written and performed by Ms. Marrero and directed by Virginia Cruz, will be presented at La Tea Theater, 107 Suffolk Street in the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center (between Delancey and Rivington Streets) in Manhattan's Lower East Side. "Daka" means I am in the Taino language and "Bocona" means big mouth, but with much love, humor and insight, Marrero assembles an evening exploring and sharing her beloved characters including MACHA, her Drag King extraordinaire alter ego, her beloved Petronelia, a character inspired by her late mother Carmen E. Hernandez, Wakateema Shaquasha, an irrepressible ghetto diva, MCDJ Guilly Guiso Jugo, a master DJ and rapper in his own mind and Elizabeth herself. All of these characters inhabit the realm of her mind and have made an impact on her life, her essence and her very being. DAKA Bocona offers the audience an opportunity to self examine itself and witness a transformation.
