Chameleons is a full-length play developed from character-based improvisation. It's one of Freestyle's most original brainstorms in the
ongoing evolution of long-form improvisational theater. Each of four actors
prepares by being interviewed by the audience, instantly building a
character based on the crowd's input. This leads to a 45-minute play, which
is improvised in the second act using as many of the characters as possible.
The "leap" into character is probably the most beguiling aspect of the
actor's craft. The ingenuity of this play is that it culminates in an
entire play based on character and relationship. Structure is provided by
an offstage improviser who serves as a conduit between the audience and the actors.
