WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Tessa Martin's one-woman show, CaribBeing, is being presented by Production House 1439 at The Barrow Group for three dates in April. Nytheatre.com writes, "Tessa Martin is funny and versatile," and calls CaribBeing, "effective, well-done and necessary...a meaningful portrayal of the immigrant experience in cosmopolitan New York City."

CaribBeing, a solo-performance piece, is about a menagerie of characters from different islands in the Caribbean who interrupt regularly scheduled television programming to bring you excerpts of Caribbean life in New York City. Real life interviews are spliced with satirical sketches to elevate the debate of cultural wars and offer insights into identity and the obstacles to cultural unity. CaribBeing takes you on a journey from Caribbean television, to the "Bochinche" Salon in East Harlem, to the West-Indian Babysitters on the Upper East Side, to a Haitian demonstration in lower Manhattan, to the Cuban Community in West New York and back on the air. Bill Van Horn directs.
