WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Today's 30-somethings grew up in the dawn of cable television and the world wide web, and were raised to believe in the promise of personal ambition. Now they're facing adulthood in a world of layoffs, crippling debt, corrupt and failing corporations, climate crisis, and insecurity. It's a generation struggling with large-scale cultural disillusionment on top of the mundane realities of adulthood: endless supermarket check-out lines, dead-end jobs, mortgage payments, marital arguments, and many more dreary, annoying, seemingly meaningless life routines. With the relentless mirages of fulfillment in advertising and entertainment all around us, it's easier than ever to lose yourself in reaching for a brass ring - for some imaginary goal involving escape and prestige, rather than for the pursuit itself. Brass Ring, the new performance project from Breedingground Productions, explores that pull between the tenacity of childhood dreams and the onset of adult realities. Using sources such as news stories, interviews, viral videos, public service announcements, children's programming, social experiments, and office handbooks, Brass Ring riffs on our insatiable thirst for achievement and validation, and how our definitions of success change as we get older. And if we actually meet our goals in our lifetime, but are still unfulfilled, what are we supposed to do for the rest of the ride?
