In Howard Brenton's new play Bloody Poetry, two men meet on the beach of Lake Geneva, and legend is made. Lord Byron is a loud and flamboyant drunk; Percy Bysshe Shelley is slender, sickly, and passionate. They are introduced via a shared mistress, Claire. Along with writer Mary Godwin, these four form a ménage a quatre in the summer of 1816.
Byron and Shelley are remembered as men who lived and loved freely; their libertarian way of life was scandalous to conservative England.
