WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
A triptych of tales that cross time and cultures, Betrothed features ensemble story-telling, a live score by Vijay Iyer, and Ripe Time's signature dynamic imagery. Inspired by Indian Kathak folk dance, Marc Chagall, and wedding ceremonies from South Asian and Western cultures, the play offers a unique look inside three women's struggle between marriage and personal independence, to explore what is one of the most controversial ceremonies of our time.

In
Betrothed, a new triptych of short plays conceived, written, and directed by Rachel Dickstein at the Ohio Theatre, we are treated to the highly theatrical stories of three different women on the verge of holy matrimony as adapted from classic works of literature. The result is exciting, visually stimulating theater, performed on a limited financial budget, but with an unlimited amount of creativity and energy.
None of these three women end up at the altar in any sort of traditional way, but that is not to say that they do not find love and/or fulfillment. These are stories that challenge assumptions, rituals, and conventions about the meaning of true love.
