This is the third production of the Gian Carlo Menotti classic Amahl and the Night Visitors. Chelsea Opera updates the opera's setting in order to emphasize its relevance to today's world. The Mother and Amahl are still a poor, single mom and her disabled son but are no longer found in a Biblical locale. Rather, they live in a one-room apartment somewhere in a NYC neighborhood. The "VIP" Kings and their Personal Assistants (Page and Bodyguards) will be present in their usual fantastic regalia, but are here in New York on an international mission of peace. When we see them enter the Mother's apartment, we are led to wonder if they are "real" or the result of Amahl's amazingly inventive imagination. The story continues as originally written but with an injection of contemporary references within the age-old themes.
