WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

In 44 B.C., the fate of the Roman Republic hangs in the balance. The most powerful man in the world, Julius Caesar, lies dead in the Theatre of Pompey, as politicians and military men ambitiously move to fill the void of power. Marcus Antonius summons the physician Antistius to uncover the truth about the assassination through a Greek technique called "autopsy". But as Antistius discovers more about the crime, the real truth becomes harder to find. Inspired by history's only mention of Antistius in Seutonius's The Twelve Caesars, 23 Knives utilizes contemporary language to weave a darkly comic mystery about politics, patriotism, and the nature of truth.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

As they say in Latin, caveat emptor! Christopher Boal's
23 Knives, being presented by the Resonance Ensemble at Theatre Row, is a dishonest play. This reimagining of the events surrounding Caesar's assassination begins with a promise to tell us seven truths. Most are obvious, but none so much as the evening's supposed capper: The play is a lie.

What's worse is that 23 Knives is so thoroughly corrupt as to believe it is both educational and engrossing when it is neither. Although Boal borrows from several genres of artistic and intellectual pretension, he has no idea what he wants to accomplish. At times, 23 Knives is a lower-decks play, depicting great events through the eyes of a minor f[...]

What are other members saying?

Fascinating play peals back secrets of Caesar.
Boal does not so much retell the Caesar legend as penetrates history with some unexpected insights. If you want to spend an intriguing evening with surprise, humor, and thought provoking ideas, catch 23 Knives in its month long run. You will be talking about it long after the last blackout. In my opinion this is what breakthrough New York theater is all about.

A Must See
Let me start by saying this- after reading several reviews on various other sites- I am quite shocked at what I see. This murder mystery of ancient Rome plays right into common themes seen in todays corrupt society- with regards to the war in Iraq, Afghanistan, and weapons of mass destruction. The suspense created by the writerBoal has you on the edge of your seat for the full show, and has you talking about the truths described in the pro and epilogue for days to come. I saw the opening night show, and still the conversation at the dinner table is of 23 knives. When I first heard the opening scene of the show, the first connection I made in my mind was to Shakespeare. The writing is so powerful, and holds so true to present day life that it would be a mistake to miss out on this show. For a small theater company to pull of a show like this is very impressive. Highly recommended!!
