Frankie and Johnny to Close on Broadway, March 9

The Broadway production of Terrence McNally’s will close on Sunday, March 9, having played 15 previews and 229 regular performances.

The show currently stars Rosie Perez (References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot at the Public Theater, the film Fearless), and Joe Pantoliano (TV’s The Sopranos), who took over their roles from original stars Edie Falco (Side Man, The Sopranos) and Stanley Tucci (The Iceman Cometh, Brighton Beach Memoirs) on January 1. The production was directed by Joe Mantello (Take Me Out, A Man of No Importance) and features set design by John Lee Beatty, lighting design by Brian MacDevitt, costume design by Laura Bauer, and sound design by Scott Lehrer.

In his TheaterMania review of the production, David Finkle wrote: “Since the amorous twosome is stripped naked a couple of times, McNally might have stripped them a little more emotionally naked. Both Johnny and Frankie eventually confide the sadder episodes that have led them to the lovelorn situations in which they find themselves, but the revealed histories are cursory; they give the impression that McNally felt he’d better include them, but minimally.”

Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune is playing at the Belasco Theatre (111 West 44th Street, near Sixth Avenue). Tickets are available by calling Telecharge at 212-239-6200.
