The Young Playwrights Festival 2002 showcases plays chosen from over 1,900 entrants, aged 18 or younger. The Young Playwrights Festival National Playwrighting Competition was founded by Stephen Sondheim, and has given first professional productions to many notable writers including Kenneth Lonergan, Rebecca Gilman, Evan Smith, Jonathan Marc Sherman, Jerome Hairston, and more. This year's events include:

Parts They Call Deep by Lauren Gunderson, 18
Emma takes a trip through the Deep South with her mother and grandmother, visited by the men who've left as they make their way to their next stages of life.

An Ice Cream Man for All Seasons by Molly Lambert, 17
A hot dog vendor challenges an ice cream man to explain why he is selling ice cream in the middle of winter in New York, leading the hot dog vendor to recall a time when he dreamed of doing something more than just selling the things that people want.

Trade by Caroline V. McGraw, 18
Four young people try to raise money to go to community college and end up owing money to a high school student and her dangerous older brother.

In addition to these events, Write a Play! Intergenerational Performance dates are Friday, October 18 at 11:30am and 4:00pm, and Saturday, October 19 at 2:00pm and 6:00pm.
