WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
In Woman Before a Glass, Mercedes Ruehl is Peggy Guggenheim, the tempestuous lover of men and art, who spent her life supporting and loving the greatest artists of the Twentieth Century. Set from 1963 to 1968 in Peggy's home in Venice, the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, the play follows the great triumphs and supreme disappointments of the legendary Grande Dame of the art world. She never bought a work of art for profit and never by chance, assembling a piece-by-piece collection that included major works by Klee, Pollack, Ernst, Miro, Chagall, DeKooning, Dali, Leger, Picasso, Duchamp, Braque, Rothko, Motherwell, Man Ray, among many others.

Mercedes Ruehl, who may be the closest thing we have to an American Anna Magnani (you know, the life force thing), has a bang-up time impersonating art collector Peggy Guggenheim in Lanie Robertson's Woman Before a Glass. The big-hearted, big-boned Ruehl is forceful and cheerfully vulgar from the first moment she arrives, berating a maid and throwing a heap of wardrobe about. She identifies the frocks as a Vionnet, a Chanel, a Schiaparelli, and an armful of other recognizable names. Costumer Willa Kim has done her homework: The filmsy dress Ruehl wears (noticeably without brassiere), and which she decides she'll keep on to welcome Italy's president, is modeled with exactitude after a Fortu[...]
