WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
At 722 Toulouse Street, in the Vieux Carré district of New Orleans, Mrs. Wire runs her dilapidated boarding house. She and her tenants, forgotten runaways from the world, struggle to find peace and meaning in an existence both absurd and heartbreaking. Helmed by Austin Pendelton, the Tony® nominated director who brought Pearl audiences the critically acclaimed production of Toys in the Attic in 2007, Vieux Carré is Tennessee Williams' shadowy meditation on sexuality, decay, and the awful power of loneliness. It stands as the most autobiographical of his late plays: his last attempt to find hope for and give voice to those he dubbed the "fugitive kind."

RE:Beautiful Production
I dont often comment on these or other boards, but I was so taken by the Pearl Theater revival of VIEUX CARRE that I thought I would offer a few words.
I saw the original production of this play and though there were a few good performances, the direction was sloppy and the set too large and cumbersome to accommodate this fragile memory piece. In the Pearl revival the venue is so intimate as to make the audience feel they are part of the production, and each and every performance is excellent. I especially liked George Moforgan...and I hope I spelled his name correctly..as a dying queen looking for love. Is the play one of Williams great plays? No? But like his SMALL CRAFT WARNINGS it is a small gem, with tremendous heart and some wonderful dialogue.
I found this revival of VIEUX CARRE to be one of the highlights of the 2008-2009 season. Kudos to the cast and to the magician, Austin Pendleton, who, as director, conjured up a quite memorable production. If you can, go!

Of Tennessee Williams' later works, perhaps none is as obscure as the autobiographical Vieux Carré, now being offered by Pearl Theatre Company in a well-acted production; the play had a short-lived Broadway run in 1977 and its last major New York appearance was in 1983. But while the play's rarity will be the chief reason for many to see this production, there's nothing rare about the writing. This atmospheric sketch of a New Orleans boarding house is full of haunting images, sad truths, and flinty one-liners.
Unfortunately, while Vieux Carré certainly feels like Tennessee Williams, it just doesn't feel like a play. In his other works, Williams builds intricate drama amidst d[...]
