WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Based on the classic 1985 cult film by Lloyd Kaufman, The Toxic Avenger is a
new musical by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change) & David Bryan (Bon Jovi), with direction by John Rando.

The Toxic Avenger is set in the mythical town of Tromaville, Exit 13B off the New Jersey Turnpike. An aspiring earth scientist, Melvin Ferd the Third, is determined to clean up the town's burgeoning toxic waste, until he is tossed into a vat of radioactive goo and emerges as a seven-foot mutant freak and New Jersey's first superhero. Armed with superhuman strength and a heart as big as Newark, he's out to save New Jersey, end global warming and woo Sarah, the prettiest, blindest librarian in town.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

There's a new lusty, flighty and spunky heroine to be found in
The Toxic Avenger, now at New World Stages: American Idol finalist Diana DeGarmo has joined the cast as the blind town librarian Sarah, and she is turning in a performance that is often as funny as it is adorable -- which is a perfect fit for this giddy guilty pleasure of a musical.

Sarah has gotten the unlikely gig because the mayor of Tromaville, New Jersey, Babs Belgoody (Nancy Opel), wants to make sure that certain records about toxic waste being dumped in the hamlet don't come to light. Belgoody's assumption about her hire is wrong, though and Sarah ultimately reveals the documents to local nerd Melvin Ferd the Third (Nick[...]

Boy meets blind girl, turns toxic after exposure to hazardous waste, saves the environment, and gets the girl. That's the basic scenario of the rollickingly funny new musical The Toxic Avenger now at New World Stages, in which bookwriter Joe DiPietro and composer David Bryan take the senseless violence and over-the-top gore of the 1984 movie of the same name and morphs them into campy fun.

The tone is set from the opening moments of John Rando's expertly directed production, when a guy appears at the top of a huge pyramid of grimy oil drums (the main element of the consistently and surprisingly clever scenic design by Beowulf Boritt), and before he can sing his first notes, he starts chokin[...]

Toxieeeee!!!!
I had seen the original films and was very interested to see how they were going to turn such an off-putting, crude, tasteless, albeit really good bad movie, into a big-time broadway musical that is fun for the whole family. Well, KUDOS to all involved from the top to the bottom. This show was LAUGH OUT LOUD hysterically funny... catchy tunes.... the sets were great... It was just all around "Job Well Done!". Diana Degarmo was absolutely adorable and just hysterical!!! Each member of the cast was simply wonderful!! I cant recommend this enough. GO SEE TOXIEEE!!!!

Very funny show!
Wasnt sure if I would like this, but gave it a shot because me and my sister just felt like hanging out. Boy, did we luck out; the show was hysterical. Many...many funny scenes throughout! And the singing was great. All of the performers were so good. We left the theatre with big smiles on our faces. Then it was off to a scrumptious dinner across the street at Seeda II. Yummy Thai food. All made for a wonderful night. Thanks, Theatermania!
