U Theatre, one of Taiwan's most celebrated troupes, makes its BAM debut with The Sound of Ocean, a rhythmically propelled, intensely physical exploration of water's cyclical journey from mere drop to stream to river and, ultimately, to the sea. For 100 seamless minutes, the performers--all supremely athletic--move effortlessly from stately tai chi-like movement, meditation, and Buddhist-inspired singing and chanting to virtuosic playing of temple bells, gongs, cymbals, precisely tuned metal bowls, and skinned drums of various sizes.
