WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Israel's Gesher Theatre, one of the world's only bi-lingual theater companies, returns to the Lincoln Center Festival. The Slave, adapted from Nobel Prize-winning author Isaac Bashevis Singer's well-known 1970 novel of the same title, weaves a desperate story of love, faith, and destiny. It tells the story of Jacob, a Jewish Yeshiva graduate who lives in Poland in the 17th-century and miraculously survives the brutal pogrom committed in his village by Chmielnicki's Cossacks in 1648, a massacre in which he loses his wife and children. Jacob is then sold into slavery and becomes a cowherd in a village high in the mountains.
The Slave will have separate performances in Hebrew and Russian:
Tuesday, July 20 at 8 p.m. (Hebrew)
Wednesday, July 21 at 8 p.m. (Hebrew)
Thursday, July 22 at 8 p.m. (Russian)
