Mike Nichols and Meryl Streep have proved in films that they're a formidable team. He
directed her somber performance in Silkwood, her giddy turn in Postcards From the Edge, and her somber-giddy stint in Heartburn. So, to some extent, we might have guessed what this team could do when collaborating in a theater. Nevertheless, no one could have been prepared for the magnificent result of their partnership in The Seagull.
It's as if Streep hadn't been away from the stage for almost 20 years and Nichols hadn't been away for almost 10, but that they've been working up to this Seagull in incremental steps by way of a dozen productions, as Stanislavski worked with his troupe. Streep's Irin[...]
