WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Spring 1946. The plan was simple: a German for every Jew. Its execution would be swift, clean, its impact undeniable. In this daring new romantic thriller inspired by actual events, a band of Jewish freedom fighters attempts to avenge a society's wrongs - if they can keep from tearing each other apart.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

Inspired by a true story that occurred in Nuremberg, Germany in 1946 when 1,900 German prisoners of war were poisoned by arsenic-laced bread, playwright Daniel Goldfarb has spun an intriguing revenge fantasy in
The Retributionists, now at Playwrights Horizons. Nonetheless, the play feels as if it needed another draft before going into production. There are great scenes, wonderful moments, and fascinating and breathtaking moral complexities that suddenly flash and then get mired in mediocre melodrama.

There is no shortage of plot in The Retributionists. In addition to four love affairs that require sorting out, there are two spectacularly large plans to exact revenge upon Germany by a group[...]

What are other members saying?

Not thrilling or romantic for a romantic thriller
I dont know how a play like this could be produced by Playwrights Horizons. It was full of cliches, had no fresh ideas or surprises, and the acting by the lead -Margarita Levieva- did not portray any glimmer of honesty. She used the same over-the-top strained whiny voice throughout the entire play. The story ended in a weird place, and probably needed another act for a resolution, although I was glad it finished when it did.

RE:Unspeakably bad
If only this WERE a joke on poor subscribers like us - the blurb they use even on this site - "In this daring new romantic thriller inspired by actual events, a band of Jewish freedom fighters attempts to avenge a societys wrongs - if they can keep from tearing each other apart." SOUND LIKE parody, and theres plenty in the play to make one think that this is just a colossal in-joke - a la "the Producers." Alas, its just the worst show Playwrights Horizons has had the misfortune to select and not abort. Avid theater-goers stand warned - even in the dog days of summer, when theres rather less to see than at any other time of the year, ... Reality TV is 10x better than this sorry excuse for a play. One can only pity the poor actors and director, trying to bring the most wooden script to life before an audience used to GOOD writing. I love P.H., but there having an August - alas, most of Sept., too - that only the NY Mets and their fans can relate to.
