WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Drawn from The Wakefield and York Cycles, The Mysteries is directed by Brian Kulick.

Nine actors take the audience from the creation of the world to the end of time in just under two hours. The Mysteries tells the epic stories of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Abraham and Isaac, Noah's Flood and Christ's Passion as seen by writers from the 12th through the 21st Centuries, including such noted authors as Nobel-prize winner Dario Fo, Russian novelist Mikhail Bulgakov and Yugoslavian dissident writer Borislav Pekic.

No matinees on Sat 2/7, and Sat 2/14.

SATURDAY SYMPOSIA

Following select matinee performances, stay for brief lectures and discussions with the following scholars:
January 24 - Arnold Aronson, Former Chair of the Theater Division at Columbia University, will speak on "When Towns Became Theaters- the Staging of Medieval Mystery Plays."
January 31 - James Leverett, Professor of Dramaturgy for the Theater Division at Yale University will speak on "From the Old Testament to Medieval Mystery Play; The Development of Medieval Mystery Plays."

TUESDAY TALKBACKS

On Tuesdays 1/27, 2/3, and 2/10, there will be post-performance discussions with the actors and creative team of The Mysteries.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

The Bible contains some of the most dramatic stories in all of literature but, too often, they're reduced to easily digestible morality tales that leave no room for skepticism. Classic Stage Company's latest production takes a different approach: The Mysteries is both stylish and irreverent, spiritual without being dogmatic, as CSC's new artistic director Brian Kulick presents a vibrantly theatrical take on some of the most well known biblical stories. Although the play draws from several different texts by writers from the 12th through 21st centuries, the overall flow of the piece is quite smooth and the production coheres into something much greater than the sum of its parts.
