WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Paula Vogel's The Long Christmas Ride Home receives its New York premiere under the direction of Mark Brokaw, reuniting Vogel and Brokaw for the first time since the 1998 Pulitzer Prize-winning play How I Learned to Drive debuted at the Vineyard.

The play - which also features puppets designed by Basil Twist - concerns what happens when a suburban family's car spins out of control after a disastrous Christmas dinner, hurtling the three siblings into the future where they confront the legacies of their childhood.

When November comes and people begin thinking about the impending holidays, good cheer is let loose in the land. So is anxiety. Indeed, it may be that anxiety is the far more prevalent condition; it certainly seems to be in this post-Freudian age when 12-step meetings are jammed with men and women questioning loudly and painfully whether they will join family get-togethers or whether, for sanity's sake, they'll avoid them like the plague.
