WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Playwright Amos Kamil asks an intriguing question in his drama, The Flame Keeper. After WWII, what was life like for the returning Jews and the Germans who had to confront them? Turnabout can be fair play. A Jewish doctor comes each morning to a store, solely for the purpose of harrassing its German owner. In doing so, he takes revenge on a single man for the sins of an entire nation. This powerful production puts a human face on some disturbing and thought-provoking ideas about conflict and confrontation.

In Amos Kamil's The Flame Keeper, which occurs shortly after the end of World War II, Dr. Julius Reiter (Lenny Mandel), a Jewish professor, starts going into the cigar shop of Ernst Gruber (Paul Whelihan) every morning to antagonize him. Always with a friendly air, but clearly with subtle revenge in mind, Dr. Reiter annoys Gruber by chattering on endlessly, requesting to see cigars that he has no intention of buying, asking the same questions over and over, and by trying to guilt him about acquiring a store once owned by a Jewish man who has not been seen since the war.
