WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

William Saroyan's self-imposed 16-year exile from the Broadway stage ended in 1957 with The Cave Dwellers, a dream-filled fairy-tale of the Lower East Side. A washed-up boxer, a pair of has-been actors, a lonely young girl, a poor family and their trained bear find sanctuary in a derelict Manhattan theatre. In a world that is quite literally coming down around their ears, this band of optimistic underdogs fashions a version of home and family that shelters them, at least for a while, against the storms of the world outside. With its poignant blend of humor and sentiment The Cave Dwellers entreats us to believe, even at the darkest times, in the glorious power of love.

For the 8:00pm performance on Thursdays, remaining tickets are available for $10.00, 15 minutes prior to curtain.

Student Tickets are available on a "Rush" basis - at the box office, on the day of the show, based on availability.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

Throughout his 1957 postapocalyptic fantasy The Cave Dwellers, William Saroyan inserted unsubtle digs deriding "the new playwrights," when his debt to -- and no doubt envy of -- writers such as Pirandello, Giradoux, Ionesco, and Beckett couldn't have been more obvious.

This is not Saroyan, the relentlessly upbeat chronicler of immigrants chasing down the American Dream; instead it's the marginalized anti-/would-be modernist trying to ride a trend even as he pretends to buck it. The result is a coarse and clumsy play, bearing a simplistic message (basically, love conquers all), a steaming heap of whimsy, and very little in the way of nuance. So it's all the more credit to the Pearl Theatre[...]
